When you hear the word chalk, your mind might instantly jump to childhood hopscotch games or dusty classroom blackboards. But beyond the schoolyard and art projects, chalk... especially the humble sticks of white or colored calcium carbonate... has some surprisingly versatile and practical uses.

Whether you’re a DIY enthusiast, a parent, or someone who just loves a good hack, here are 10 unexpected DIY uses for chalk that go way beyond the blackboard.
1. Fight Fabric Stains Before They Set
Chalk can be your first line of defense against oil and grease stains. Just rub white chalk onto the stain as soon as possible. It helps absorb the oils before they set in. Let it sit for a bit before washing as usual. It’s one of the simplest chalk hacks for cleaning you can keep in your laundry routine.
2. Prevent Silver from Tarnishing
Place a piece of chalk in your silverware drawer or jewelry box. The chalk absorbs moisture, which slows down the tarnishing process. It’s an easy, non-toxic way to help keep your silver shiny longer. A great household use for chalk that requires zero effort.
3. Keep Tools and Hardware Rust-Free
Like silver, your tools and nails are also vulnerable to moisture. Toss a few pieces of chalk into your toolbox or nail jar to absorb excess humidity and protect your gear from rust. Another handy trick in the toolbox of DIY uses for chalk.
4. Stop Screws from Slipping
If you’ve ever had trouble getting a screw into a tight hole, rub the screw threads with chalk first. It acts as a dry lubricant, making it easier to twist in.
5. Eliminate Musty Smells in Closets and Drawers
Chalk's moisture-absorbing properties come to the rescue again—this time in your closet. Bundle a few sticks in a breathable fabric pouch and place them where you need a little deodorizing power. A practical and budget-friendly household use for chalk.
6. Mark a Hemline in Sewing Projects
Tailors and crafters have long used chalk to mark fabric because it’s easy to see and even easier to brush away. Whether you're hemming jeans or pinning a new project, chalk offers a no-commitment guide.
7. Create a Natural Ant Repellent
Chalk can deter ants and other crawling bugs. Draw a thick chalk line around entry points, ants won’t cross it. The powdery texture messes with their scent trails. This surprising chalk hack for cleaning and pest control is both natural and chemical-free.
8. De-Tangle Knots in Jewelry
Trying to undo a stubborn chain knot? Rub a little chalk on it first. The powder helps reduce friction, making it easier to loosen tiny tangles in delicate necklaces or bracelets.
9. Grip Enhancer for Sports and Fitness
This one's popular with rock climbers and gymnasts, but also works for tennis players and even people doing pull-ups. Rubbing chalk on your hands helps reduce sweat and improve grip.
10. DIY Matte Finish for Paint
Want a chalky, vintage feel in your furniture paint? Add crushed chalk to regular latex paint to create your own DIY chalk paint. It adds texture and a rustic matte look—perfect for upcycled pieces and creative DIY uses for chalk around the home.
Chalk may be one of the most underestimated items in your home, but it packs a surprising punch when it comes to utility. From household uses for chalk to clever crafting and even pest control, this everyday item deserves a spot in your toolkit.
So next time you're at the store, grab a pack of chalk—it’s not just for sidewalks anymore.

These are great uses the ant one especially. If you have colored chalk you can use it for hair chalking too! Works just as well as the store bought ones just wet, dry, and seal with a bit of hairspray or a flat iron and you'll have cute hair color all day. Just don't get it wet until your ready to wash it out 😉

I've heard about the hair chalking but never tried it. I heard it transfers easily to clothes so thats part of the reason I haven't given it a try.
