Ingredients you will need for your prep:
- 29 oz can of sliced peaches (drained, save the juice, you will need it) - You can also use fresh peaches if you prefer.
- 1 cup self-rising flour - If you only have all-purpose then you can substitute it but you will also need to have baking powder and salt in addition. See specific amounts below under the FAQ "Can I use all-purpose flour."
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 stick butter
- 1 cup milk
How to make a peach cobbler!
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Melt your stick of butter and pour your melted butter over into a 13x9 baking dish.
In a large bowl mix together your milk, sugar, flour, and the drained syrup from your sliced peaches.
Pour the mixed ingredients over top of the butter.
Add the peaches layered on top of the batter but do NOT mix.

Whether you use canned, fresh or frozen peaches will depend on the time of year and what you can find on hand, but we typically use canned because it makes it that much easier.
The directions you will find here are for using canned peaches, but you could easily use fresh for this recipe if it is peach season.
Whatever the season, this classic peach cobbler dessert will bring you all of the praises.

Like I said above, this dish is great by itself but even more delicious with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Of course, this is our favorite way to have it.
Let that ice cream melt over the hot cobbler for just a little bit and you have the perfect touch of warm and cold. Yuuuuuum!
How do you fix a runny peach cobbler?
Start with ½ teaspoon of cornstarch, mix with your dish and place back into the oven.
The secret to getting the cobbler to thicken is all about keeping it hot.
The heat will activate the corn starch and thicken the remaining juices.
Do you use salted or unsalted butter?
You will want to use unsalted.
Can I use all-purpose flour instead?
You can but you will need to add in 1 ½ teaspoons of baking powder and ¼ teaspoon of salt in addition to the flour.
How much does this serve?
Approximately 4 - 6 servings
Can you substitute peaches for other fruits?
Absolutely, this easy recipe would go great with other fruits like cherry, blueberry, raspberry, etc.

Yes, you definitely can.
Christina says
It sounds so good I'm gonna make it an try it
Kahwana says
I made this easy Peach cobbler. I added a sprinkle of granulated sugar & cinnamon mix to the top of my cobbler. This recipe is a sure winner!! This recipe I'm sure can be used with other fruits. Fresh fruits would need sugar & water added to have the necessary liquid in exchange for the drained juices of canned peaches. I will be proud to share this Peach Cobbler with many others.
Melissa says
So glad you liked it Kahwana. Yes, a little sprinkle of sugar on top adds a nice touch and crispiness to the dish.
Eddie says
If I use 2 cans of peaches for peach cobbler will I have to double the other ingredients as well
Melissa says
If you use 2 15 oz cans then no you won't double the ingredients but yes if you use 2 large cans you will need to double the rest of the ingredients otherwise you will have too many peaches.
Kahwana says
@Eddie, I don't think it will matter as far as taste & the proportion of batter. Just make sure your dish is not shallow, as the extra peaches will make it higher in the dish. Good luck!
Lora says
If I am using salted butter and all purpose flour, can I just add the baking powder and not the salt since the butter is salted?
Melissa says
Yes, you will just skip the salt.
Gina Serrano says
If I double this do I just use one stick of butter or do I increase it to two?
Melissa says
You will need to double all of the ingredients, so you would need 2 sticks of butter.
Constance says
The easiest dessert you can make when you need something quick and delicious. I’ve made it several times and my family loves it.
Joshua Hall says
I use fresh fruit that I sweetened. I love this recipe, it’s easy and just like the cobbler my great- grandmother made.
Melissa says
Joshua,
I bet using fresh peaches makes it even tastier.
Louise says
If using fresh fruit crushing and sweetening to taste will provide enough juice.
Stephanie S says
Do you use salted or unsalted butter?
Melissa says
unsalted
Dorie says
Can I use all purpose flour instead?
Melissa says
Dorie,
You can but you will need to add in 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
Karen Davis says
Made this cobbler but made it in a cast iron skillet like my grandma use to make hers absolutely delicious thanks for sharing
betty says
can I substitute the bisquick for flour?
Melissa says
Betty,
Do you mean substitute the flour for Bisquick as this recipe already uses flour? I have never used Bisquick to replace the flour in this cobbler recipe before. You could try it but I won't guarantee that it would turn out correctly. Also, I would google how to substitute flour for Bisquick because you may need to add some additional ingredients.

I made two batches of this peach cobbler and it's so easy and DELICIOUS!!
The only thing I did differently was decreased the cup of sugar to 1/2 c and it was perfect!!
* try adding some fresh peaches with the canned 🙂
Dixie says
Could you make this gluten free by using oat flour instead of regular flour?
Melissa says
Dixie, I honestly don't know much about oat flour but from what I have read is that you would have to make some other adjustments for it to come out right. I would suggest searching for a GF peach cobbler recipe if you really need to make the change to oat flour.
Loni says
I make this but have never used the syrup before. It always comes out yummy and very moist. But I will try using the syrup next time!
aileen says
I am from Australia and would like to know how much is a stick of butter (what weight or ounces )

Aileen, 1 stick of butter would be 4 ounces.
Cathy says
It's in the oven and smells heavenly! ! Thanks for the recipe!
Ashley Cozad says
I made this tonight and it was wonderful... Especially with a scoop of ice cream. I did however, use baking powder and salt. I also added nutmeg and cinnamon. I don't like to measure things and I kind of just winged it, it turned out perfect! Thanks for the recipe it's super easy and worth the hour!
Anne Cardwell says
I love this recipe and have been making it for years. I my original recipe calls for regular flour and 2 tsp. of baking powder (not soda) and 1/2 tsp. salt. So I think either way is good. I never have self-risng flour on hand so this works for me. It is always a hit!!!
Stephanie says
Can you use all fresh peaches? I have so many to use up, but just making sure it won't turn out dry!
Melissa Coleman says
Stephanie, I have never tried it with fresh peaches because I always use the syrup from the can with this recipe. It couldn't hurt to give it a try though. It might come out a little drier but I bet still just as yummy. You might could even try blending a peach to give it some of that extra syrup it would be missing from the can.
Choo Magoo says
Melissa, I have a HUGE can of peaches ( 6lb 10oz ) so if I measure out the peaches how much syrup do I use ??
Melissa says
Choo,
I have never measured how much was in the can of a 15 oz of peaches so it would just be a guess. I would say maybe 1/2 cup, if it looks a little dry you could always add a little more. Trying to measure out from a bigger can of peaches would be just trial and error.
Kim says
I made this peach cobbler it was fast and easy and my family loved it.
Melissa Coleman says
Yay! Glad to hear it. 🙂
Gabriela says
About 20 min into baking and it already looks delicious! I'm so excited!
Carli says
This looks delicious! I am going to make it tonight...can I sub Almond milk for reg milk?
Melissa Coleman says
Carli, I have never tried it with almond milk but I don't see why you couldn't. It might change the taste just a little but I bet still just as yummy.
Teanna says
How many does this serve?
Melissa Coleman says
Approximately 4-6 depending on how big of servings.
Alexa says
You drain the syrup or use it?
Melissa Coleman says
Definitely use the syrup. 🙂

Apple is hands down my favorite. The recipe looks super adaptable. I see cherry, blueberry, and raspberry cobblers in my future!
Melissa says
It is definitely adaptable to any fruit you like best. Cherry would be delish with this batter topping. YUM! I will definitely have to try different flavors soon.
