Ingredients for 4th of July Jello Shots
- 3 ounce blue gelatin - blue raspberry
- 3 ounce red gelatin - your choice of cherry, strawberry or red raspberry
- 1 envelope unflavored gelatin
- 1 ⅓ cups boiling water
- 1 cup milk
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- Maraschino cherries
- vodka (optional if you want to make them boozy)
How to make Red White and Blue Jello Shots!
Prep your cups on a cookie sheet so that you can easily move them to the fridge once poured.
In a medium sized bowl, add the blue gelatin and pour ⅔ cup of the boiling water over the gelatin. Stir until dissolved.
If you want to make these treat boozy you can at this point add in a little vodka. I do not give you an exact measurement for this because some people like it strong and others just a splash.
Allow the blue gelatin to cool (but not set) before pouring it into each cup, about a ⅓ full.
Place the cups in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow it to set.
In a clean medium-sized bowl, sprinkle the unflavored gelatin over ⅓ cup of milk and let it bloom.
Meanwhile, heat the remaining ⅔ cup of milk to almost boiling, either in a saucepan, or in the microwave.
Add the hot milk to the bloomed gelatin and stir until completely absorbed/dissolved.
Allow the mixture to cool then pour the white jello on top of the blue Jello until about ⅔ full.
Return to fridge for at least 30 minutes to allow to set.
In a medium-sized bowl, add the red gelatin and pour ⅔ cup of boiling water over the gelatin. Stir until the gelatin is dissolved.
If you are making these boozy you can go ahead and add more vodka at this step.
Allow the red gelatin to cool before pouring it into each cup.
Place the cups in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow it to set.
Place a toothpick into each maraschino cherry at the stem end so that you can press the toothpick into the white jello to keep the stem upright while the red jello sets.
Place cups in the refrigerator for 3-4 hours to fully set.
When the jello is set, remove the toothpicks slowly.
Store the jello cups in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
Cover the tops of the jello cups with plastic wrap or store them in an airtight container for up to three days.
Can I make non-alcoholic versions of red, white, and blue jello shots?
Absolutely! You can easily make non-alcoholic versions by replacing the alcohol with fruit juices, flavored syrups, or even sparkling cider.
How far in advance can I make red, white, and blue jello shots?
Jello shots can typically be prepared a day or two in advance. However, it's best to check the specific recipe you're using for any recommendations on timing. Remember to store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
How can I prevent the layers from blending together?
To achieve distinct layers, make sure each layer is fully set before pouring the next layer. This can be achieved by allowing each layer to chill in the refrigerator for a sufficient amount of time before adding the next layer.
Can I use different flavors for the red, white, and blue layers?
Yes! Experimenting with different flavors is part of the fun. You can choose any flavor combinations you like for each layer. For example, strawberry for red, coconut for white, and blueberry for blue. Be creative and enjoy mixing and matching flavors to suit your taste preferences.
